At a G7 meeting in France, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the U.S. war with Iran is expected to last another two to four weeks, marking the first official shift from President Trump’s previous four-to-six-week estimate. Rubio emphasized the U.S. is determined to achieve all its objectives and is close to serious negotiations, though communications with Iran are occurring through intermediaries, not directly.
He explained that Iranian officials are avoiding phones for fear of assassination, slowing diplomacy, and that two officials seek talks but require top leadership approval. The U.S. is simultaneously deploying more troops and considering escalatory options involving ground forces.
Rubio clarified the U.S. does not need G7 help to reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately but seeks allies for an international maritime task force after the war to prevent Iranian control and deter Tehran from imposing tolls on passing ships. All G7 members agreed to this “next phase” presence.
Regarding potential talks, Rubio said the U.S. awaits clarification on Iran’s representatives. Vice President Vance would likely lead U.S. delegations, though Trump has also tasked Rubio, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner with diplomacy. Rubio maintained the war should end in “weeks and not months.”
